Common Heating Problems We Experience During Maryland Winters
Many things can impact your heating system and cause it to fail during the harsh Maryland winters. The winter of 2021-2022 has been especially cold and that causes heating systems to work very hard and sometimes need repair or replacement. Many things can cause the inefficiency of your HVAC system. When your heating system fails give Staton Plumbing, Cooling & Heating a call and we can come right out and help you with any problem you may encounter.
Here is a list of some of the more common issues that can negatively impact your comfort during the harsh winter season.
Improper Maintenance
Your heating system needs regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly and to help ensure that on the coldest nights you don’t lose heat. We offer a HVAC System Maintenance Agreement that includes Staton coming out in the Spring and in the Fall to check your systems to prevent any emergencies. This includes checking over 20 points in your system.
Dirty Air Filters
When your air filters are dirty the furnace will have trouble circulating air, this strains the system and diminishes its effectiveness. There is no iron-clad rule as to how frequently you should change the filter as there are climate factors that impact how quickly it gets clogged up. Some factors that affect your filter longevity are, how many people live in the household, whether you have pets or not and whether there are smokers inside the home. The general rule, though, is every 3 months.
Thermostat Malfunctions
If your thermostat breaks it can impact your HVAC systems fan and cause it to fail. It can also make it impossible to regulate the system or get it to turn on. If your thermostat breaks, call us at 410-263-5100 and we will come out, explain your options and replace it for you.
Pilot Light or Faulty Ignition Control
In a gas furnace, the pilot light ignites the gas burner allowing the furnace to provide heat. In other heating systems, the ignition control serves this purpose. If the pilot light goes out or your ignition control is faulty you will no longer be able to turn your heat on.
Insufficient Heat
A clogged filter can lead to insufficient levels of heat. If you do not have a clogged filter but your room is still not warm, your heating system may be too small for the room it is trying to heat. There are options if this is occurring such as installing a mini-split system.
Too Noisy
Furnaces make different noises as they function, but if you hear abnormal squealing sounds or squeaks, you may have a mechanical problem.
To avoid or fix any of these problems or an entirely different issue, Staton is here to help.
